Halloween was a busy time here at Quest. Quest students went trick-or-treating in Squamish and provided candy for Squamish kids. They collected canned goods for the Squamish Humane Society. There was a Halloween dance sponsored by the Quest Coast Sound Radio (QCSR)—the student run radio station on campus. Friday night also saw the first in-season home basketball games of the season!
The night started off with the women’s game against Capilano. In a pre-season scrimmage, the Kermodes beat Capilano handily, so the women’s team went into the game with high expectations. After some back and forth in the first quarter, the game went to halftime with Kermodes leading 43-25. While Capilano caught up a bit in the second half, Quest was able to hold on long enough to win 77-70.
During halftime, Quest Vice President Toran Savjord spoke on the prospects for the women’s team this season, as well as their success last year. In the 2013-14 season, our Quest women’s team won Provincials and went on to play at Nationals. After the speech, athletics raised the banner our women’s team received from Provincials last year. This is the first banner (hopefully of many to come) to be hung in the Quest gym. You can watch the banner raising ceremony here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96Ui4HtIA9Q.
After the ceremony, it was time to get back down to business with the men’s game. With the stands packed with Quest students in Halloween costumes, the men’s team took on Capilano. After a rocky start, the Kermodes slowly made their way back to trail just behind Capilano for the rest of the first half. At halftime, Quest was down 28-33.
During halftime, to raise more Quest spirit, the SRC held costume contests. Lots of students had dressed up, so there were lots of Questies on the floor for the contests. The group contest was tied between a group dressed as the Jamaican Bobsled Team and a couple dressed as Juno and Paulie Bleeker. For the individual contest, the two winners were dressed as a deer and Shayne McConkey’s Saucerboy.
Coming back into the second half, the men’s team came out with lots of energy. The Kermodes pulled neck and neck with Capilano, and in the last few seconds tied the game. Going into overtime, the energy in the crowd was overwhelming. Capilano missed two-thirds of their free-throw opportunities, probably due to the Quest fans dressed as Hershey’s kisses dancing in front of the end-zone. In the five minutes of overtime, Quest pulled ahead, winning the game 73-67. At the final buzzer, Quest fans dressed in all number of costumes stormed the court.
Hopefully, these first wins are indications of the season to come!
