Heading into the PacWest Provincial Championships this weekend, our women’s basketball team remains undefeated!
Our final home basketball games of the season were this past weekend. On Friday night, we took on the Camosun Chargers. Our women won handily against the Vancouver Island school. Our men’s team (currently ranked 3rd in PacWest) trailed to the 5th ranked Chargers for most of the game, and unfortunately lost even after their comeback in the third quarter.
The next afternoon, both teams took on the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners. During the women’s game, both teams stayed close throughout the entire game. With only about 10 seconds in the game remaining, our women were tied with VIU (ranked 2nd in PacWest) when second year Miriam Baumann was fouled by VIU. She was able to make one of her free throws, and our Kermodes ended up winning 74-73. This meant that they were able to end the season undefeated, as they went 21-0 this year!
Because this was the last in-season home game, it was also the Senior Day for our basketball teams. In between the games, all of the fourth year players were honored for their hard work and dedication to the teams over the years. Most of the players had their families join them for the ceremony. After the ceremony was over, the men took on VIU. Although they fought hard throughout the game, our Kermodes lost to the Mariners, who are currently the top team in PacWest.
Earlier this week, PacWest announced the 2014-2015 All-Stars for the league. On the men’s side, first year Kermode Dallas Searles was selected for the PacWest second team. For the women, fourth year Shayna Cameron and second year Miriam Baumann were both selected for the PacWest first team. Shayna Cameron was also selected as the PacWest Player of the Year, while the women’s coach Dany Charlery was selected as Coach of the Year.
With the end of the regular season, our teams are now headed to the Provincial Championships for PacWest. This year, Provincials are hosted at Columbia Bible College (CBC) in Abbotsford. Both of our teams have a shot at making it to the Gold Medal games on Saturday, which is a pretty awesome feat for our school. Quest students are heading down for the games on Saturday to go cheer on our basketball teams! If you’re in the CBC area anytime in the next couple of days, stop by and support our Kermodes!
