The Taj Mahal was one on my checklist of sights to see this month. This beautiful white marble palace is located in Agra, which is about 30 hours of travelling from my house in India. The suffer was long but amazing. India isn’t as flat as I always envisioned but rather a majestic forrest. There are cows, dogs and goats freely roaming the streets and villages. Anyways, back to the topic of The Taj Mahal, it was very overwhelming as I got closer and closer by each step. This beautiful palace took over 20 years and just under 20,000 workers th at slaved away. This building was constructed in the honour of emperor Shan Jahan’s third wife. According to our tour guide, she made three requires on her death bed to her husband; to take care of their children, not marry again and to build a monument in her honour. What struck me the most from this story is to what lengths an individual will go for love. As he grew old, he wished to have a black Taj Mahal constructed as well on the other side of the river so husband and wife would lay together separated by water. However, he was locked up by his son because he believed a second Taj Mahal was a waste of money for family and the towns people. Also, our tour guide confirmed that the hands of the workers were never cut like the rumours claimed. Overall, I had an amazing time at this breath taking work of art.
